Message you are assisting the cooling system by extracting more heat by way of the heater. However, I've never noticed a drastic drop on the temp guage when I've done this. I suggest that you check for leaves and other debris that may be caught in front of the radiator and A/C condenser to be sure you don't have anything blocking the airflow up front.
